One year ago today, wildfires began to burn on the island of Maui, brought on by high winds from a southerly hurricane. They destroyed the historic town of Lahaina, and impacted just about every household, organization and community on the island. Artists and creatives lost their studios and livelihoods, and irreplaceable cultural landmarks were destroyed. Traditional and indigenous communities were devastated. Over 100 people died.
In the coming weeks we will share stories of resilience and how the arts are helping to rebuild
communities and rejuvenate lives on Maui. But today, we remember and honor all that was lost. You are in our hearts.
